Liquor Board: McGinn Has Never Met with Us

By Erica C. Barnett July 15, 2010

This post has been updated with information from Mayor Mike McGinn.

At yesterday's press briefing, P-I.com columnist Joel Connelly asked Mayor Mike McGinn whether he had talked to the state liquor control board about a proposal, unveiled by McGinn earlier this week, to extend liquor service hours past 2 am. The liquor board would have to approve any such policy change. Noting that the liquor board policy changes typically proceed at a "glacial" pace, Connelly asked McGinn point-blank: "Have you talked to the liquor board?"

McGinn's response: "Our staff has spoken to the Liquor Control Board. They have said they are open to the idea of different closing hours or extended hours of operation."

However, liquor board spokesman Brian Smith says no one from McGinn's office has ever talked to the liquor board or its staff. "We've never met with anyone from the mayor's staff," Smith said, noting that board members did meet with eight club representatives, including Dave Meinert, back in January.

After his press briefing this afternoon, McGinn acknowledged that his staff hadn't met with the liquor board, saying that staffers had told him the board was open to extending liquor sales hours based on reports from club representatives about their meeting in January with the board.
