SHARE Can't Protest Tom Douglas Event

By Erica C. Barnett June 25, 2010

The city's parks department has told SHARE, the homeless advocacy group, that it can't hold a competing event
to protest celebrity chef Tom Douglas' proposed weekend salmon bakes in Victor Steinbrueck Park. Douglas, who owns two restaurants adjacent to the park, proposed holding $12 salmon bakes on weekend nights to raise money to increase security in the park.

However, parks department spokeswoman Joelle Hammerstad says Douglas has only applied for one permit, on August 28, despite his initial announcement that he would hold them every weekend throughout the summer. The permit to use the park costs $500, and 10 percent of all sales must go back to the parks department.

Hammerstad says that although the department initially told SHARE that the group could use half the park to hold a competing "wiener roast"---they planned to charge between $2 and $3 a hot dog---"that turned out to be a miscommunication," Hammerstad says. "We don't ever issue two permits for the same day in one park."
