McGinn Will Pick New Police Chief "This Month"

By Erica C. Barnett June 18, 2010

Despite requests from some city council members that Mayor Mike McGinn reopen his search for a new police chief in light of two recent, high-profile police scuffles, a spokesman for the mayor's office says McGinn plans to choose a new chief "within the month."

City council sources told the Seattle Times that they want McGinn to reopen his police chief search in light of two high-profile recent incidents. In the first incident, two officers beat and kicked an unarmed Latino man in a nightclub parking lot; in the second, an officer punched a teenage girl in the face after she shoved him during a jaywalking stop.

After McGinn narrowed the candidates for police chief down to three, one, Sacramento police chief Rick Braziel, dropped out of the running. That left East Palo Alto police chief Ron Davis and interim Seattle police chief John Diaz in the mix.

"We have two strong candidates. The [police chief search] committee did an excellent job" in narrowing down the initial list, McGinn spokesman Aaron Pickus says.  "Sometime this month, the mayor will make his pick."
