Extra Fizz: Polling in the 34th Race Reportedly Shows Heavey Ahead
No, we haven't seen the poll, but sources from two campaigns for the 34th District state Representative being vacated by Sharon Nelson—the Mike Heavey and Joe Fitzgibbon campaigns—say they've been told about recent polling that shows Heavey far ahead of Fitzgibbon and the rest of the field in the race for state Rep. in the district (West Seattle, Vashon, Maury, Burien). Heavey and Fitzgibbon
, along with a third candidate, Marcee Stone, are all Democrats. Heavey is the son of a former state legislator and current King County Superior Court judge.
Fitzgibbon, 23, has stirred enthusiasm among progressives (he recently picked up endorsements from liberal groups like Fuse, the Washington Bus, and the Washington State Labor Council), but he's reportedly behind Heavey by double digits. Stone is also, reportedly, slightly ahead of Fitzgibbon.
The other thing we've heard about the poll that was surprising was that Geoffery Mac McElroy, an Independent in the heavily Democratic 34th district, is running second behind Heavey.
Two huge footnotes: The poll reportedly finds that most people are undecided. And as for McElroy's surprising showing, political observers chalk that up to the people in the district who identify as Republicans—evidently enough to outweigh the scattered votes for the three Democrats in the field.
The other rumor we've heard is that the poll was done by "labor." The Washington State Labor Council, which endorsed both Fitzgibbon and Stone, says they have not done any polling in the 34th District.
"The WSLC has not done any polling in the 34th," says WSLC spokeswoman Kathy Cummings. "I don't think there has been any done by anybody. There will be some soon."
