On his blog, City Council member Tim Burgess links to an interesting chart comparing the policing environments in Seattle, Sacramento (where former police chief candidate Rick Braziel, who withdrew his name from the running yesterday, is police chief) and East Palo Alto (where candidate Ron Davis is chief). Among other things, the stats show that Seattle has a "staggeringly high" (Burgess' words) rate of property crime, while East Palo Alto has a "stunningly high" violent crime rate.

Sacramento, meanwhile, has seen a consistent decline over the last seven years in both major violent crimes and major property crimes---a fact Burgess may have seen as an argument for Braziel, whom Burgess, in the same post, called "an exceptionally well qualified candidate [who] could have assumed command of the police department from day one and provided outstanding leadership."
