Mike Heavey's Non-Withdrawal Withdrawal
Editor's note: We make no apologies for our obsession with the state House race in the 34th.
If the West Seattle Blog's initial report about last night's 34th Distirct endorsement meeting is any indication—they reported that state House candidate Mike Heavey "withdrew from the race"—Heavey's speech to pull his name from consideration for the endorsement was a bit of a blunder.
When I got to the meeting, Heavey was going around from person to person explaining he wasn't dropping out of the race , he just wasn't seeking the endorsement. And the District Vice Chair, Kim Becklund, had to announce that Heavey wasn't dropping out.
I missed Heavey's (evidently confusing) announcement, but he sent me a copy of his speech, and here's how he concluded it: "I hope that I can demonstrate to this distinguished body throughout the next couple of months, that my campaign is viable and worthy of your support."
It definitely sounded like he had fellow candidate Joe Fitzgibbon confused. When Fitzgibbon approached Heavey out in the hall, he said: "I didn't see this coming," shaking Heavey's hand and wishing him luck.
Heavey thanked him and told him he was just withdrawing from the endorsement and the nomination, not the race.
