Extra Fizz: $125K Settlement in Prisoner-Shackling Lawsuit
The state has reached a $125,000 settlement with a woman who says she was shackled during labor at a Washington State prison. Last year, the state legislature passed a law, which we wrote about here, that barred shackling women during labor. Prior to the passage of the bill, the state estimated that "only" 30 percent of pregnant women prisoners were shackled during labor, sometimes in leg irons.
