PubliCola Comment of the Day

By Camden Swita April 9, 2010

We haven't done a PubliCola Comment of the Day in quite a while (since January 14). But we were inspired by  Cola reader Dadvocate's zingy response to today's Morning Fizz
item about the soft drink lobby telling legislators they would fiance their political opponents in November if this year's budget included a soda tax. So, we've decided to resurrect our daily shout out. At least for today.

Here's Dadvocate:
"Was the State Patrol called in regards to #1? It appears the soda industry is making threats to Legislators."

Dodvocate is referring to last session's spat between Governor Gregoire and the Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) over the Workers Privacy Act. Here's Josh's story about it
, but in a nutshell: WSLC wanted the bill passed, the governor, Speaker of the House and Majority Leader in the Senate didn't, so when the WSLC sent an email to some legislators telling them they'd cut their contributions during the next election cycle if they did not support the legislation, Gregoire found a great excuse to kill a bill she didn't like to begin with and called the cops (the Washington State Patrol). She asked them to investigate whether WSLC was trying to exchange money for votes which, of course, is illegal. The Speaker, Majority Leader and governor then issued a joint declaration that the bill was dead because of the ethical questions.

Here's to Dadvocate for connecting the dots.
