Democratic State Sen. Darlene Fairley Will Not Seek Reelection
The sayonara email that State Sen. Darlene Fairley (D-32, Edmonds, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park) just sent to her Democratic colleagues this afternoon is below.
Fairley, a moderate Democrat and 16-year veteran, is the chair of the Government Operations and Elections Committee, which sounds boring, but actually has a crack at the majority of bills that move through the legislature—everything from land use to government reform, basically the two things besides the budget that the state deals with.
This isn't much of an opportunity for the GOP, though. Despite conjecture that 2010 could be a big year for Republicans, the 32nd District is not much of a swing district. All of its state legislators are Democrats—including flaming liberal Rep. Maralyn Chase.
Liberal U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-1, WA) represents the turf at the federal level.
It does open up a committee chair spot for the Senate Democrats, who—after a clumsly session—may be looking at an overhaul. For example, their Ways & Means Vice Chair of the Operating Budget, Sen. Rodney Tom (D-48) was ousted from the budget negoatiations after voting against the budget.

Subject: LIFE IS TOO SHORT
To Everyone:
Around Christmas time last year I was griping and groaning about having to go back to Olympia soon. My husband (who had just about had it with my complaints) said I should wait until the end of this session to see if I felt the same.
If anything, my feelings are more negative than before.
I’ve always believed that if you hate what you’re doing, and you can't give it your best, stop doing it. Life is too short to waste on things you don’t enjoy doing.
We never know what’s going to happen next, but I do know that I’m not running again. 16 years is enough.
Darlene
