The Triple Door Musicquarium (216 Union St.), just on the other side of the massive fish tank you pass on the way into the Triple Door theater, is a cool, contemporary downtown ultra-lounge with fantastically fresh music.
To start with, The Triple Door has fantasticallly fresh music. Every Wednesday, DJ Mchateau—the bar's resident DJ—spins in front of the 1,900-gallon freshwater fish tank. The rest of the week features an assortment of great music, from salsa to soul, to mid/downtempo, to Afrocentric beats. The space itself is sexy, sophisticated, and modern, without being too pretentious.
Behind a horseshoe-shaped bar that seats about 30 people is one of the better selections of single-malt Scotches in Seattle—Macallan 12 and 18, Laphroig, Lagavulin 16, Oban 14, Balvenie, and all the Glens, along with all the good blends and a strong selection of bourbons. They also have an expansive and classy wine selection with a stellar cellar wine list to boot.
The one down side for me was one of their signature drinks, The Green Dragon: Thai basil, citrus, muddled lemon and triple sec. Sweet, sweet, sweet with lots of green pieces of basil to stick between your teeth. They do use all fresh fruit juices, so even though I couldn't personally recommend a drink using any of them, I'm sure there are plenty of mixed drink lovers who might like them.
If find yourself downtown in the late afternoon or late night, check out the Triple Door's happy hour from 4 to 6 pm and from 10 to 12am Sunday through Thursday. Four dollar specialty cocktails, $3 drafts, and pretty awesome $3-$5 food items from Wild Ginger next door—salt and pepper squid, calamari stuffed with green curry pork, and otak otak, banana leaf parcels filled with seasonal fish in red curry.
Highly reccommended for a date is the back corner booth. Dark and even sexier than the rest of the room, it's probably one of the best bar makeout spots in the city.
