More on the Nickels and Bag Tax Polling

By Erica C. Barnett June 26, 2009

Digging deep into the new poll numbers Josh mentioned earlier:

• Although Mayor Nickels's support remains at around 24 percent overall, it varies wildly among different demographic groups: Among voters under 34, for example, his support has dropped dramatically over the last month, from 34 to 22 percent; meanwhile, Sierra Club enviro Mike McGinn, trailing in fourth place overall, comes in second among younger voters. Among older voters, meanwhile—those who're most likely to vote in an off-year primary—Jan Drago surges to 19 percent compared to her 15 percent overall rating. All of which may be meaningless, of course, since the most popular choice is still "undecided."

• Not surprisingly,  younger Obama-generation voters overwhelmingly support a proposed 20-cent fee on disposable bags, by a margin of 66 percent with 30 percent saying they'll vote "no." (The fee gets 47 percent support overall.)

Meanwhile, a whopping 56 percent of voters over 65 say they'll vote against the fee. Interestingly, although more than a quarter of voters surveyed were "undecided" on the mayor's race, just seven percent had not yet made up their minds about the bag fee. Those who said they supported Nickels were also much more likely to support the bag fee, while Drago supporters were much more likely to oppose it.
