Sounders 3, Originality 0

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER comes to Seattle in 2009, courtesy of co-owners Paul Allen and The Price Is Right host and comedian Drew Carey. Great, we thought, can’t wait to see what they’ll call the team. Then club officials settled for “Seattle Sounders FC” (FC stands for “football club”). Too bad that’s the name—sans FC—of two other local soccer teams, one that played in the ’70s and ’80s, and one that still plays in a lower division league.

Really creative, guys! We can’t place all the blame on Paul and his new nerd pal Drew—nearly half the 14,500 future fans polled on the team’s Web site voted for the old moniker. A few names we wish the owners and fans had considered: The Seattle Socks-and-Sandalers, the Showcase Showdowns, Seattle Hybrids, Seattle Vulcans, Seattle ’Softies, Seattle Geoducks, Seattle SuperSonics.
