The Bavarian village trappings are fairly recent—in 1965, city planners decided to “go alpine” to distinguish itself as a tourist destination. But those fudge-selling, stein-hoisting Sound of Music vibes have an undeniable charm for visitors, especially when the town decks itself out for Christmas.

Leavenworth has leveled up its dining scene, added a destination spa hotel and a stomach-twisting mountain coaster. It’s still charming enough to serve as the setting of the occasional streaming rom-com, but the town’s reputation as a Northwest travel destination long ago surpassed its theme park roots.
