Property Watch: An Itty-Bitty Cabin for a Cute Little Price

On the outskirts of the Olympic National Forest along the Hood Canal side of Lake Cushman, this six-acre property hides an itty-bitty retreat. Trees, ferns, and creeks surround a tidy little cabin that has just the off-grid basics.
The exterior is a miniature version of a classic cabin aesthetic, with a little front porch and a simple gable roof. Inside, exposed grain covers every surface, including vertical board walls, a tongue-in-groove vaulted ceiling, window trim, and built-in cabinetry.

There’s a loft on either end: a storage space above the front porch and, at the back, a sleeping area with a wood rail and ladder. Scalloped trim and logs beneath the sleeping loft make the built-in table and benches underneath it that much cozier. Low-profile cabinetry lines the nook for stashing away essentials, and a window on the far end brightens it up.

A small wood stove fits in by the front door for both warmth and cooking, surrounded by small decorative shelves and hooks for cookware and spices. The home doesn't have running water, but a small wooden stand near the dining nook holds a stoneware dispenser for a large plastic water jug—there’s a lot of effort here to use handsome all-natural materials. If electricity is a must, the place is wired for a generator.

The front porch connects to a much larger deck—larger than the cabin itself, although that’s not saying much—surrounded by a tall railing and arbor. It’s a sweet space for lounging up and out of the mud. A repurposed pergola awning from an apartment building provides cover for another social spot, complete with a fire pit and barbecues.

Unplumbed places all have different bathroom solutions, and in this case, it’s an outhouse. It’s covered, but only enclosed on three sides. The open air keeps the smells away, at least—and the current owners call it “a poo with a view.”
Any buildings here have an extremely minimal footprint on the property itself, which is full of dense forest, trails, and even a small waterfall. More outdoor adventures are available through the HOA, including private lake access.
