Property Watch: The Good Life on a Bainbridge Island Spit

This funky home, perched atop an uncommon landform, has spectacular views and plenty of space for entertaining.

The goal was always to gather. Tulsa real estate redeveloper Michael Sager fell in love with Bainbridge Island and bought this circa-1959 house on Point Monroe—better known as Hedley Spit—back in 2017. He took out every wall that wasn't load-bearing, added windows for even more views, and reimagined a two-bedroom bungalow as the kind of place where friends and family would want to get together.

The entrance poses two choices. Option number one: Walk through the sunshine-yellow double doors into the game room, with its colorful assortment of furniture, including a barber chair. (Michael had a thing for chairs.) If you like what you see, the furniture can all come with the house.

To say you have a front-row seat to the water’s edge is a bit of an understatement. Directly across from the yellow double doors, a glass-paned garage door opens to reveal a boat launch for your personal watercraft. That’s adjacent to a covered patio with a grill and lots of seating options. In front of the patio is a firepit ringed by adirondack chairs, ideal for marshmallow roasting on a clear evening.

Off the patio is a standalone guest suite, with its own white-brick fireplace, kitchenette, a bathroom, and an eclectic mishmash vibe.

Now back to the main entrance, where two roads diverged in a yellow wood doorway. Option number two: Head left through a single yellow door and up a staircase. That takes you to the upper level, a bright and cheery living room area with windows everywhere. To get even closer to the views, step out onto the patio, where cable railing was used to keep from obstructing the scenery. The rough-sawn timbers that line the ceiling contrast with the more modern feel of the fireplace and furnishings.

The kitchen brings an industrial flair and the ability to entertain large groups, with enough workspace for multiple people and a beverage fridge strategically located out of the way for easy access when the kitchen is otherwise occupied. (Thirst obeys no cooking schedule.)

This floor also contains three bedrooms—one with a double-sink ensuite bathroom, another with a bed adorably shaped like a boat—along with another bathroom and a stackable washer/dryer.

So beef up your board game collection and invite all your friends to savor the sand spit life—these views of the Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, the Olympics, and the Cascades weren’t made to be gazed upon alone.
