The property had been in owner Keith Wilbur’s family for decades before he and his wife Joy, a designer, decided to expand it into their dream home. With engineering support from International Homes of Cedar, Joy designed the home and its open, airy floorplan herself. Monroe-based contractor Love and Sons brought its all-timber frame to life in 2019.
The interior design nods to a natural, untamed setting. Through the wave-motif front door, a hand-tiled river design winds up to a lofty, treehouse-like main floor with a vaulted exposed-beam ceiling. Statement fixtures evoke a starry night, while 16 skylights bring in daylight.
On one side of the open stairwell, a living room features up-close views of Lake Washington from floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony—Waverly Beach Park is just two blocks away. On the other, a kitchen with exposed-grain cabinets has all the bells and whistles, including Dekton counters and an induction oven, making room for a cozy dining area beside it.
Find an office and a bedroom up here, or head downstairs for two more bedrooms and an elaborate suite. In the suite’s sitting area, a stone pillar fireplace offers a touch of midcentury design—and has a private sauna on the other side. A soaking tub, closed off from the more, er, functional parts of the bathroom, adds some extra relaxation.
The suite also has its own doors to the back deck, fashioned around a tree. Facing a sitting area with built-in benches, a yurt has plumbing and electricity for semi-outdoor, extra-luxurious lounging.
The original home has plenty of space on its own, with three bedrooms, a large living area, and a dining room created from a former sunroom. Its sloping timber ceiling got a few skylights during the remodel, and glass doors lead out to its own private patio. Being literally an entire vintage house with separate entrances, it’s much larger than the typical ADU, so it’s perfect for long-term renters or as a home for extended family.
