While Orcas Island comes with a bevy of natural wonders, it also includes Eastsound, a small town with artsy vibes and a close-knit community. We set our sights on a sweeping compound in the San Juans for the inaugural Property Watch, but this is a much different kind of listing: A cozy, down-to-earth home that’s a 10-minute walk to civilization.
It’s built for everyday life, but this place still has serious cabin vibes, from its beach-house shingles outside to the reclaimed wide-plank hardwood floors and plentiful cedar. The upper-level great room has a classic look, with a vaulted ceiling and a large sleeping loft above the kitchen. A skylight at the ceiling’s peak brings in some extra sunlight (or a view of the rain), while a wood stove in the corner adds warmth. A deck spans the entire length of the water-facing wall, offering a little outdoor extension through a pair of french doors.
The loft isn’t the only bunking option here. Downstairs, two bedrooms each have their own set of french doors to the back patio. The home’s on a downward slope, giving these basement rooms their own little peek through the dense evergreen trees at the water below.
It’s hard to overstate how much cedar is running through this home (in case this wasn’t all Pacific Northwest enough). The loft, completely constructed from the wood, creates a little drop ceiling over the entryway. In the bedrooms, small beams and baseboards add an extra decorative touch. Even the kitchen island and a bathroom vanity are decked out in exposed grain.
A fenced backyard includes its own fire pit. The water is just a block and a half to the south, so hanging out back here could feel relatively beachy on its own—but to dip your toes in the water, it’s a pretty short walk to public beaches, too.
