Wineries were invited via email to participate in the Top 100 tastings. They could send a maximum of four wines, one in each of the following categories: one $25 or less, one $25–$50, one $50 or higher, and one white wine of any price. Alternately, wineries submitting in only one price category could send in two wines.
All wines were organized by varietal, sampled blind, and scored by Sean P. Sullivan, Seattle Met’s wine guru, a contributing editor at Wine Enthusiast, and the founder of the Washington Wine Report website. Wines were subsequently broken into various lists and ranked based on score, price, and overall excitement about the wine. Each winery was limited to one top-scoring wine in a given category. Both the Washington and Oregon sides of the Walla Walla Valley were considered in creating this list.
