What: Kerloo Cellars Syrah Blue Mountain Vineyard Walla Walla Valley $20
Why: Winemaker Ryan Crane of Kerloo Cellars in Seattle has impressed going all the way back to his inaugural wines in 2007. Over the years, the wines have only become more refined and nuanced. Lately, however, Crane has added a new arrow to his quiver: value.
Late last year Crane launched a second label called SoDo Cellars, specifically aimed at the value tier. The result was one of the best wine values of the year, which I wrote about previously. Now he’s released a top-notch value under the main label, and this wine is not to be missed.
The 2014 Kerloo Cellars Syrah Blue Mountain Vineyard Walla Walla Valley ($20) offers compelling aromas of flowers, herb, smoked meat, and plum followed by pure fruit flavors livened by a zing of acidity. Walla Walla Valley syrah is increasingly gaining a reputation for excellence, and this is the best priced example out there on the shelves today, drinking like a wine twice its price (and as a result will likely be gone in the blink of an eye so make haste). Drink up!
