This is a big week in Seattle ice cream developments. First, Kurt Farm Shop unleashed what has to be the year's most memorable flavor. Now Portland ice cream phenom Salt and Straw sends word the company will set up shop in Seattle August 19-21.

The new La Marzocco Cafe at KEXP's Seattle Center digs will host a Salt and Straw ice cream cart. Scoops will happen Friday and Saturday from 12-8pm and Sunday, 10am-3pm. A dollar 1 from every scoop benefits KEXP.

Salt and Straw is known for unconventional flavors that pull from culinary know-how rather than gimmickry. I still remember trying a scoop of baked potato-flavored ice cream at Portland's Feast festival a few years ago and being shocked that it was actually really good. Ditto for the sea urchin flavor. This weekend, the cart will scoop some classics, like sea salt with caramel ribbons, strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper, and chocolate gooey brownie. The roasted parsnip and banana sorbet is part of its farmers market summer series.

No surprise, when a storied ice cream company collaborates with a coffee space, the result is affogatos, made with a shot of hot espresso from Campos Coffee, La Marzocco's resident roaster this month. Salt and Straw has three flavors designated for affogato duty: That sea salt with caramel ribbons, Freckled Woodblock chocolate, and a flavor whipped up just for La Marzocco—toasted white chocolate.

Salt and Straw founder Kim Malek may have taken Portland's food culture by storm, but she has Seattle roots, and a past that includes working with Jody Hall at Cupcake Royale. She and her cousin Tyler Malek, Salt and Straw's flavor savant, will be doling out scoops in person on Friday, August 19 from 2-4pm, though massive crowds are a good bet all weekend.
