What: Casa Smith Cervo Barbera Northridge Vineyard Wahluke Slope 2014 $20

Where: McCarthy & Schiering (Queen Anne), Downtown Spirits, DeLaurenti, deVine Wines

Why: Charles Smith (K Vintners, Charles Smith Wines, Sixto, Charles and Charles) has made a name for himself in part by offering both high quality and high value wines. Smith’s latest project, Casa Smith, may well be his best bang for the buck wines yet.

Casa Smith is Smith’s new project dedicated to Italian-inspired wines. The winery currently focuses on three varieties: barbera, sangiovese, and primitivo. Each of the wines comes from a single vineyard and each hits the delicious gong hard. And, for $20, these wines are utterly irresistible.

Barbera is a relative rarity in Washington but the 2014 Casa Smith Cervo Barbera Northridge Vineyard Wahluke Slope ($20) shows that the variety clearly can excel here. Aromas of plum, currant and dried herbs lead to a mouthful of juicy fruit flavors. It appeals on every level and, especially for the price, is downright dazzling. Drink up!
