What: Two Vintners Make Haste Red Wine Yakima Valley 2013 $20; Two Vintners Grenache Boushey Vineyard Yakima Valley 2013 $30
Why: One of the joys of living in Washington right now is the abundance of top quality, well priced wines that can be found right here in our backyard and nowhere else. Most of Washington’s 850+ wineries make relatively miniscule amounts of wine. For this reason, many of the state’s best wines rarely make it outside the Washington borders, leaving all the more for the rest of us.
Two absolutely stunning examples of small production, extremely well priced local wines come from Woodinville’s Two Vintners. Only 70 cases were made of the Two Vintners Grenache Boushey Vineyard Yakima Valley 2013 ($30). It’s a thrilling example of the variety, with complex aromas and flavors that include flowers, smoke, spice, and earth. It’s all about delicacy, drinking almost more like a pinot noir. Wines at this level of quality are simply not found at this price. Seek it out.
Meanwhile the Two Vintners Make Haste Red Wine Yakima Valley 2013 ($20) is all Cinsault (pronounced, San-so), a red Rhone variety usually used as a blending grape. This wine – of which only 90 cases were made - is chock full of elegant, pure red fruit flavors that show exceptional balance and length. Make haste indeed!
