Beer Plus Yoga, a local outcropping of the national interest in combining ales and asanas, also happens to meld two of Seattle's passions: craft brews and fitness trends. This does not mean that downward dog is done atop a keg or that there's a flight pairing with each warrior pose. Just Add Yoga—Beer Plus Yoga's parent business—encourages Seattleites to move together and then hang together.
Here's how it works: Just Add Yoga, founded by Jessica Fleming and Dawn Hood, partners with a brewery or bar, which clears sufficient space to hold a yoga class. Afterward, the establishment provides participants with a pint or a flight. Classes are always on a weekend morning, so there's no excuse not to stick around. And participating bars even have a brunch option.
Acknowledging the reality of the Seattle Freeze, Fleming sees the drink as a metaphor for community building. By holding yoga classes at places that non-practitioners might find more comfortable and accessible, she and Hood hope to break down the intimidation factor of a traditional studio environment, while encouraging people to socialize.
The classes are geared toward all levels and they don't stop at beer. There's cider plus yoga and Champagne plus yoga (aka wedding day yoga), and wine plus yoga is in the works. The idea is to highlight different establishments and different instructors, bringing in yogis and businesses from all around the city.
Just Add Yoga officially launched this past January and, with nods from places like Washington Beer Blog, has a grown quite a following. There are classes scheduled for the next four weekends in a row at breweries and beer bars in Montlake, Ballard, Hillman City, and North Seattle. Check the Beer Plus Yoga event page to register.
