What: Treveri Cellars Demi-Sec Sparkling Gewurztraminer Columbia Valley NV $17

Where: Ballard Market, Esquin Wine and Spirits, Whole Foods (Roosevelt Square)

Why: Due to an extremely successful marketing campaign, sparkling wines in general and champagne in particular are thought to be for special occasions, such as New Year’s Eve. We'd like to encourage you to abandon this contrivance if you haven’t already and consider sparklers year-round wines. Think of it, you wouldn’t reserve cabernet for just one day of the year would you? Why should sparkling wines be any different?

An increasing number of Washington producers make sparkling wines but few dedicate themselves to the craft. One that does is Treveri Cellars. Located in the Yakima Valley—and a must stop if you are passing through —Treveri makes a wide assortment of red and white sparklers. Winemaker Juergen Grieb received a degree in sparkling winemaking (yes, such things exist) in his homeland of Germany. After years of working at a custom crush facility in Washington, he returned to his roots and launched Treveri.

While the whole Treveri lineup is worthy of exploration, the Treveri Cellars Demi-Sec Sparkling Gewurztraminer Columbia Valley NV ($17) in particular is a standout. It brings the bright aromas of spice and lychee that this variety is known for. As a demi-sec, there’s a touch of sweetness that livens up the palate. It’s a perfect way to ring in the New Year and also can be enjoyed as an aperitif.

Happy New Year everyone!
