Booze On Tap

Starting Tonight, the Baltic Room Puts Shots on Draft

The lineup includes Jameson, Hornitos, my old friend Fireball, and my arch nemesis, whipped cream vodka.

The draft shot system at Baltic Room in all its glory! Sans the permanent tap handles, which are still on the way.

First there was Fernet on tap, and of course Fireball and Jager machines. Now Baltic Room on Capitol Hill is taking the humble shot to the next level, courtesy of a 10-handle machine dispensing them on draft. Because pouring straight from the bottle is so Tom Cruise in Cocktail.

The dispenser looks very similar to your standard beer-tap setup, but it’s all custom made. A small fridge holds 10 three-gallon booze kegs, and there are 10 bottle-shaped tap handles, and a whole lot of potential for debauchery. General manager Rion Haber says he knows it to be the largest draft shot system on the West Coast—possibly the country. But when you Google “draft shot systems,” only stories about professional athletes and beer come up.

The lineup includes Jameson, Hornitos, my old friend Fireball, and my arch nemesis, whipped cream vodka. Though the shot system reduces the amount of bottles that get smashed into the recycling bin at the end of the night, it might also aid in more drunken 21-year-olds yelling and crying outside at 3am. Which I’m sure nearby residents will appreciate.

Along with the installation of the draft shots, Baltic Room has been undergoing a much-needed facelift. While a lot of the remodel is cosmetic—from new flooring and upholstery —the bar has completely redone the sound, the lights, and the VIP area (yeah, you know where I'll be), and expanded the back bar.

While some finishing touches are still in the works, this weekend marks Baltic Room’s 16th anniversary. So it’s time to celebrate in true sweet-16 style. How about with a spiked punch shot? Dubbed “Effen Punch” by bar manager David Moravec, it's basically fruit punch with vodka straight from the tap. Just remember: The shots may look the same as in your younger days, but the hangovers are a lot different when you're in your 30s.

The party starts tonight and lasts through the weekend. Find out the details on music and such here on Facebook
