Starbucks Adds Calorie Counts to its Menus

Now if only the company could institute a spellcheck system for names.
The debate about posting calorie counts on chain restaurant menus hasn’t seen much traction in Seattle—mostly because our town leans toward the locally owned and locally grown. When was the last time you ate at a McDonald’s or Taco Bell within the city limits? It took me a few minutes to remember where you can find a McDonald’s or Taco Bell within the city limits.
Finding a Starbucks around these parts is slightly less challenging. Today Big Mermaid announced that it will post calorie counts for its beverages, and food offerings. The move is a voluntary one, well ahead of pending federal requirements for posting nutritional info—and especially bold timing considering Starbucks just added tons of buttery croissaints and pastries to its menu.
Starbucks beverages run quite a caloric range, especially when you factor in the different sizes, milks, and syrup offerings. In case anyone was wondering, a grande nonfat caramel ribbon crunch frappuccino packs 560 calories and 18 grams of fat, while a grande skinny cinnamon dolce latte has 120 calories and zero fat grams.
The numbers will start appearing on Starbucks menu boards and in pastry cases June 25. It’s a move already mandated in some big cities, and the company makes its calories, fat, protein, and other nutritional info readily accessible on its app and website. Which might be more user-friendly than the menu boards considering the amount of customization that goes along with most drink orders.
