Spring Drinking Refresher: Cocktails

Seasonal updates on your drinks of choice.

I’m wearing a turquoise sweater today that I bought this fall at Nordstrom. I remember the day when I bought it. It was so bright and pretty, so soft and cashmerey.

Today, this sweater, to me, represents a long winter of Tuesday mornings spent staring bleary-eyed at a shelf full of such sweaters. I’ve worn it about once a week for five months and I can’t wait for the moment when I can toss it into the back of the storage closet for the next five.

The bar is supposed to be our sanctuary from these sorts of ruts, and yet the same thing happens with drinks. Perhaps you discovered a love for old fashioneds with rye this October—mmm, delicious. So you started ordering them steadily by December, and at this point you shudder to think about how many you’ve conceived over this long, wet winter.

Or maybe you’re a year-round repetitive orderer. Maybe you’ve been doing vodka tonics or gin martinis since you were legal. Or since before then, even. If trying something new seems called for, check out this slideshow. It’s five drinks you may be drinking, plus five suggestions for lighter, more interesting, more warm-weather appropriate cocktails you might opt for instead. If they sound just awful, ignore me and ask your trusty bartender if she has any suggestions for a new take on your old favorite.

Either way, spread your wings, my little cocktail-hour butterflies. Spring is (sort of) here, and it’s time to try something different.
