One Night Only: The Suffragette at Poppy

A cocktail that celebrates women’s suffrage and supports women in media.

November 8, 2010

Oh the women! The ladies will ride into Poppy tonight to celebrate women’s suffrage and support women in media.

Do you know what today is?

Why, it’s the hundredth anniversary of womens’ right to vote in Washington State.

If you had a proper education and/or you watch Boardwalk Empire, you know that the women’s suffrage movement came out of the temperance movement. It was the same ladies who fought for prohibition that eventually won women the right to vote. Thus it is somewhat ironic to celebrate suffrage by drinking booze.

Veronika Groth, bartender at Poppy, is aware of the irony. With the Suffragette, she chooses to embrace it. The cocktail is a mixture of gin, pear eau de vie, yuzu juice, and simple syrup with a pear slice for a garnish. If you order one today, half of what you pay for it will go to Reel Grrls.

Cheers to chicks.
