UPDATE 4:43: Due to changes in the schedule of the Shell station owner, Pai’s will not be able to park on Broadway November 10 as originally planned. Pongsupaht hopes to be there November 17.

Starting Wednesday, November 10 new food truck Pai’s is parking at the Shell station on the corner of Broadway and Pike. Thailand-born, Hawaii-bred Pai Pongsupaht hopes to settle there for the foreseeable future, but says he’s considering the first two weeks a test run.

Pongsupaht purchased his mango-colored kitchen 14 month ago, and first hit the streets with his cross-cultural, upbringing-inspired menu November 2. Street food is something Pongsupaht, who went to UW and worked in several kitchens throughout college, grew up eating.

The thing to get is the $7 plate lunch, which is “pretty much everything you’d want” from a meal, Pongsupaht says. There’s rice, a blend of jasmine and red cargo, along with two sides from a rotating menu—macaroni salad, kimchi, sesame broccoli, Hawaiian slaw. For a main, choose from Kalua pork and cabbage, Korean short ribs, herby thuli thuli chicken, or dressed-up tofu cutlets. “It’s a total mix, which is what Hawaii is,” points out Pongsupaht.

If the mushroom sliders make a cameo, opt for those—“people went nuts” for them at an event Pongsupaht recently catered.

Pongsupaht is shopping around for other locations, but is content with a thrice-weekly schedule as he gets his wheels wet. If Pai’s makes another pit stop, it will likely be Interbay.

In the meantime, you’ll also find Pai’s in Eastlake and First Hill. Here’s when and where.
