Thanksgiving Wine Recs

Plus, what not to pair with a turkey-day feast.

November 23, 2009

All the wine stores get the same question this time of year: Which wines go well with Thanksgiving dinner?

The answer, says Maureen Brennon of Pike and Western Wine Merchants, is any wine that is fruity but not oaky or tannic. Leave the cab sauv out of it, in other words. Brennon says she’ll be pairing her turkey and sides with pinot noir, while some of her colleagues are opting for Beaujolais. Merlot works, too, says Brennon. White-wine drinkers, meanwhile, will find gewürztraminer to pair well with t-day fare.

Here are two reasonably priced Pacific Northwest bottles up for the job.

1. Cristom 2007 Mt. Jefferson Cuvee pinot noir ($30) Make sure you decant this value bottle from Cristom in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, then check out the raspberry and cranberry aromas. Awesome value.

2. Dowsett Family 2008 Gewürztraminer ($21) I tried after it was recommended by the Local Vine’s Sarah Munson for our list of the best WA wines under $50. You hear a lot of talk about the new world struggling to make tasty gewürz—I don’t know about all that, but I think this fruity, balanced wine will accompany your dinner just swimmingly.

Happy Thanksgiving.
