Buon Ferragosto!

A Roman holiday this Sunday, August 16th at La Spiga

By Jessica Voelker August 11, 2009

La Spiga’s dining room is transformed into an Italian street festival this Sunday.

Pop quiz, failed Catholics: do you know what August 15th is? Why it’s Ferragosto, the holiday that commemorates the Virgin Mary’s ascension into heaven. La Spiga will be celebrating this Sunday, August 16th rather than on the 15th, but whatever works, right?

In Italy Ferragosto is a big freaking deal, a party in the streets for which the whole country shuts down—not that Italians tend to do a lot in August anyway, most of that month is reserved for vacation. Must be nice.

Anyway, the restaurant will open up the garage-door facade to reveal a dining room and patio transformed into an Italian street festival…by which I mean it will set up a bunch of stands in the main area and back patio where, for $40, you can gorge yourself on morsels torn from a whole roast pig and seafood and vegetable skewers, among other delicacies. There will be a cash bar with wine and cocktails and live music. The party goes from 4-9pm, to RSVP call 206-323-8881 or email [email protected].

If you want to scope La Spiga out before you commit to celebrating Ferragosto there (it comes but once a year, after all) I suggest you go for happy hour. One of the best deals in town.
