Surviving Sun Deprivation: Weekend Edition

Dr Strangelove and Dolly Parton

January 16, 2009

The best way to counter Seasonal Affective Disorder is to distract yourself from it. Here are some things to keep your mind out of the clouds this weekend.

Friday, January 16
If you haven’t been to Oddfellows yet, go. Perfectly complimenting Linda Derschang’s inimitable way with interiors, her partner Erica Burke makes amazing, simple comfort food (Shephard’s Pie, mac and cheese) that couldn’t be more perfect for the current climate (both economic and meteorological). Plus they have giant beers. Afterwards, catch the darkly hilarious Dr. Strangelove, the current midnight movie at The Egyptian.

Saturday, January 17
What could be more soul-warming than Dolly Parton? How about a Dolly Parton tribute night! Local roots-music bands, among them Purty Mouth and The Starlings, play songs from the Backwoods Barbie’s considerable repertoire. It’s at the Conor Byrne Pub, which is conveniently located at the end of Ballard Ave—so start the night early and bar crawl your way towards renditions of "Jolene" and (God Willing) "Nine to Five."

And if you’re not tuckered out by Sunday, see my previous post about the Iron Bartender showdown at Tigertail.
