Documentaries about Scrabble (Word Wars) and the Scripps National Spelling Bee (Spellbound) well exceeded our expectations, which is why we have high hopes for Ready, Set, Bag! about a national grocery bagging competition. (Yup, there’s a contest for that, too.) The film focuses on eight state champions—mostly teens and twentysomethings with unfathomably sunny dispositions—who head to Las Vegas for the three-day event. We’re rooting for home-schooled Ohio boy Ryan.

Though the movie made its debut at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2008, it opens in Seattle this week at Central Cinema, screening August 6-11, with director/producer Justine Jacob leading a Q&A after Friday night’s screening. It travels to the Pickford Film Center in Bellingham on August 14. Portions of Ready, Set, Bag! ticket sales go to food banks across the country; locally, $1 from each ticket will be donated to local nonprofit Food Lifeline.
