Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up: Seattle U's 'SportsCenter' Moment

Plus, 'Simpsons' memes, the Mariners' new Korean slugger, Will Ferrell, and more.

BUZZER, BEATEN

Seattle University has yet to break through since returning to NCAA Division I play in 2008 and currently sit at 12-11 on the season, but the Redhawks got a little taste of the national spotlight last Thursday night. Locked in a 56-56 tie against Chicago State with only 5.1 seconds remaining, SU guard Brendan Westendorf secured a defensive rebound and bolted to midcourt to heave a desperation 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded. Bank. In. Win. The shot sent the KeyArena crowd into a frenzy and eventually the shot found its way onto SportsCenter's top 10 plays of the night. It may not be an NCAA Tournament bid, but it's certainly a moment Seattle U players and fans won't soon forget.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Will Ferrell is the talk show panel GOAT. The funnyman always comes prepared with gutbusting conceptual comedic bits that make the normal Q&A format seem like child's play. On last night's live, post-Super Bowl edition of The Late Show, he delivered once again. Noting that Stephen Colbert had yet to have the late night staple that is the animal expert guest on since launching the show, Ferrell offered his services. Dressed for the part, he spewed off total nonsense about the viciousness of adorable and tiny "endangered" creatures that were brought to the stage. It's pure distilled silliness.

GO(HNONONO)P

Sometimes the best comedy can't be scripted. At Saturday's debate of GOP presidential hopefuls, the hilarity came without the candidates saying a word. Ben Carson apparently was baffled by the process of walking out to the stage, instead stopping in the entry way. From there, everything snowballed into pure comedic awkwardness that would've made the writers of The Office jealous. A man peaked out to shoo Carson forward (which the doctor ignored). Donald Trump stopped too. Jeb Bush delivered a bizarre facial expression when passing the pair.  In the madness, the moderators forgot about John Kasich. It's like watching a car wreck; a clown car wreck.

A DEEP BERN

While Saturday Night Live had no chance of topping that natural humor, the weekend's Larry David-hosted episode still got its share of political laughs via Bernie Sanders. The senator himself appeared in a sketch about equality regarding a sinking ship's lifeboats, but the highlight of the show came when David mashed up his Bernie impression with Curb Your Enthusiasm for "Bern Your Enthusiasm." The pretaped bit uses the over-the-top neurotic humor of the HBO sitcom to explain why Sanders lost the Iowa caucus by such a razor thin margin. (Larry's... err... Bernie's germaphobia and inability to lend a helping hand play a role.)

A NEW DAE

Now that football season is over (WHOOOO BRONCOS!), Major League Baseball Spring Training is just around the corner (pitchers and catchers report in 10 days). Last week, the Mariners added an unexpected and incredibly interesting player: Korean slugger Dae-ho Lee. The 1B/DH played his past four seasons in the Japan Pacific League, knocking out 31 home runs in 2015. The intriguing thing about his skill set is the combination of power and plate discipline that's somewhat reminiscent of Nelson Cruz (for full analysis of Lee, check out Jeff Sullivan's Fangraphs piece). At the very least, it's always fun to have a kinda fat guy who can just launch homers. Baseball always needs more of those guys.
