Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up: An Odd Week for Seattle Sports

Plus, 'Batman v Superman' meets 'It's Always Sunny,' Hannibal Buress, and the perfection of Pony Time's album cover.

THAT'S SO MARINERS

The Mariners season may be (read: is) a lost cause, but occasionally the club still provides a moment of joy or two. Yesterday, the team finished off a series win over the Toronto Blue Jay and their legion of invading Canuck fans thanks to an extra innings walk-off home run courtesy Franklin Gutierrez. But that wasn't even the craziest moment of the game. In the fourth inning the Mariners turned a one-of-a-kid 3-6-2 triple play (that's first basemen to shortstop to catcher for those scoring at home) that looked as weird and disjointed as you'd expect a Mariners triple play to look. It literally took a Blue Jays player straight up falling down while standing on third base, but the Mariners need any help they can get.

THE ULTIMATE BATTLE OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT

Let's me honest, while the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may be pretty intense, it doesn't seem that... fun. It looks to be more of the same moody tone found in Man of Steel. One thing that could brighten the scene? Some cheerier music. Enter Charlie's tweaked out "Dayman" song from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Albert Lopez edited the existing footage together to cast Superman as the Dayman and Batman as the Nightman, and it's almost unbelievable how perfectly the comedic ditty fits the superhero showdown.

WHY, HANNIBAL? WHY?

Comedian Hannibal Buress's new show Why? is the strangest new show on television. It feels like Comedy Central just committed to giving him a show, and he didn't bother to try figuring out what that show would actually entail until he started three weeks ago. That's not totally a bad thing. Why? has a bizarre free form energy to it that matches Buress's comedic flow. Nothing's consistent from week to week—one week there might be a panel, the next a musical guest—but in an age where everything is so tightly produced and managed by entertainment corporations, it's kind of fascinating to see where Buress will take viewers next. Last week, he played to his strength as a man on the street interviewer by talking to PETA protesters that had gathered outside a circus.

WELL THAT BACKFIRED

While the doldrum of the summer sports calendar continues to roll along, football season is tantalizingly close. The first NFL preseason game kicks off in less than two weeks. And with every new football season comes a new installment of the ultra popular Madden video game series. Series publisher Electronic Arts has been rolling out the player ratings in this year's version, and Marshawn Lynch is the highest rated running back. But when the official Seahawks Twitter account questioned why Lynch wasn't given a perfect trucking (i.e. barreling down and running over dudes) rating score of 99, the Madden Twitter account shot back a perfect response that hit 'Hawks fans where it hurts.

PONY TIME, ALL THE TIME

Seattle rock duo Pony Time just raised the bar for combining an album title and cover art. On September 11, the band will self-release its new LP Rumours 2: The Rumours Are True and the Fleetwood Mac-inspired album cover is perfect. Just take a gaze at its majesty below. Oh right, the music. Pony Time also released the first track from Rumours 2—"Time Tells Me"—and it's more of the band's great energetic no-frills rock.

Bonus: Pony Time drummer Stacey Peck also directed the new S music video for "Like Gangbusters!" that was released last week. It focuses on the very real fake tabloid culture of Seattle's alt and punk rock scenes (aka the #peckarazzi).
