Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up: SNL 40 and Zach LaVine Dunks
40 Years of Laughs Last night Saturday Night Live celebrated its 40th anniversary with SNL 40. The three and a half hour special dragged a bit, but highlights included the touching in memoriam reel, Bill Murray killing it as lounge singer Nick Ocean singing the Jaws theme as part of a very long segment on the show's musical comedy, and Miley Cyrus singing Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" (really, it was great). While the show wasn't exactly packed with a lot of laugh out loud moments, the high point was probably Andy Sandberg and Adam Sandler's Digital Short about performers breaking and laughing during SNL sketches.
Jump Out of Your Seat Bothell High School's own Zach LaVine put on a show on Saturday night, dominating the NBA Dunk Contest with his otherworldly leaping ability. The 19-year-old rookie brought an energy to the event that hasn't been seen in years, starting out with the superb Space Jam dunk and following it up with a silky smooth behind the back dunk. Expect LaVine to return to the competition next year to try and become the first back-to-back dunk champ since fellow Seattleite Nate Robinson accomplished the feat.

Listen Lovers of heady lyrics and delightfully disjointed guitar sounds rejoice, Speedy Ortiz has returned. Led by songwriter Sadie Dupuis, the band excels at making defiantly smart rock tunes, and its new song "Raising the Skate"—from the group's upcoming record Foil Deer—showcases these strengths quite well. As Dupuis bluntly repeats to start the chorus, "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss." Foil Deer arrives on April 21 and the band heads to Seattle for a show at Barboza on May 27.
HOW LONG UNTIL SPRING TRAINING? Speaking of the NBA All-Star festivities, while LaVine may have ruled the court on Saturday night, he wasn't even the best Seattle athlete in the building. There can be only one true king, and his name is Felix.
