He's Baaack: Mike Daisey Coming to Seattle Rep in May

The raconteur follows up his Apple story with two West Coast premieres.

By Laura Dannen April 5, 2013

Mike Daisey, man on a mission.

We meet again, Mr. Daisey. A lot has happened since we last saw you. Remember when you staged The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs at Seattle Rep last April that both praised the genius of Steve Jobs and condemned Apple's labor practices at Foxconn? Seattle loved it!

This American Life, however, did not. Ira Glass said you fudged a few too many details and retracted the excerpted story because he couldn't "vouch for its truth." The Atlantic called it the "sad and infuriating case of Mike Daisey." It wasn't the best of times. But you've moved on, delivering two new monologues with the same ferocity you always employ: arms waving, passionately making your case. It's feverish theater, and terrible journalism. And it always makes us think.

We'll see you in May. Tickets are on sale now at seattlerep.org.

American Utopias
May 1–4 at 7:30
The blurb: "Daisey takes us everywhere to pursue the story: from Disney World and its nostalgic theme park perfection, to the drug-fueled anarchic excesses of Burning Man, to Zuccotti Park, where in the unlikeliest place the Occupy movement is born. Gunplay, giant glittery dildos, raving animatronic presidents, and brutal police actions come together to paint the landscape of our American dream." American Utopias premiered at the Public Theater (NY) in October and is currently in the middle of a month-long run at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.

F*cking F*cking F*cking Ayn Rand
May 8–11 at 7:30
The blurb: "Reviled by millions for her infantile philosophies and turgid prose, Ayn Rand is simultaneously worshipped by millions more for her ideological purity and dedication to the self at all costs. Torrid rape sex, terrifyingly bad movies, and the underpinnings of the modern American financial system all play a role in how Ayn Rand became the most powerful woman in the American mythos today." F*cking F*cking F*cking Ayn Rand premiered at the Public Theater in January.
