Two New Grocery Stores Open in the Region, More to Come

Grocery store nerds and passionate shoppers in the Seattle area had an exciting week, with two major grocery stores moving into new territory. On the Eastside, Canada’s largest Asian grocery chain T&T Supermarket, follows fellow classic Vancouver brand Sun Sui Wah in opening its first US location in Bellevue. The enormous 76,000-square-foot store in The Marketplace at Factoria opened today. Yesterday, local chain Saars Super Saver Foods expanded its reach from the southern suburbs, bringing its budget prices and broad selection to the former HT Market (and, for those with long memories, Larry’s) location at Oak Tree Village on Aurora.
T&T already has more than 35 locations across Canada and a strong reputation for cool stuff beyond the basics. Think of the much-coveted Korean and Japanese beauty, fancy fruit boxes, and all the premium Asian spirits they can bring to this side of the border. The store will have a self-serve hot bar, made-to-order street food, and its own bakery. It will also, in all likelihood, have very long lines and big crowds as it opens amid what is already the industry’s busiest season. (I’ll be the one waiting at the jianbing stand, shoveling egg tarts in my mouth while I wait for my Chinese crepe and ponder which collagen mask will give me that glass skin.)

While the well-traveled might already be familiar with T&T, locals are more likely to know Saars Super Saver Foods, which has seven stores around the region, from Tacoma to Oak Harbor. But it barely creeps into Seattle—its northernmost store on the mainland is White Center. In a city with multiple grocery chains known for how expensive they are, Saars’ affordable prices are an exciting development. They also bring much-needed diversity to the grocery game, with big Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Asian food selections. Need a whole animal for a weekend barbecue? They’ve got your goat (and lamb).

On slightly less exciting notes, at least for people outside the immediate neighborhood, last month also brought Queen Anne its new Safeway, two and a half years after the old one closed, and Eastlake a location of local upscale gourmet shop Kitchen & Market.
It seems that grocers are realizing how hungry the city is for more options. Eastside South Asian specialist Mayuri hoped to get its South Lake Union store open by the end of this year, though it seems delayed, and the store also announced a return to Issaquah. In 2025, Greenwood, already amid an epic glow-up, will get a Trader Joe’s in the former Safeway location. PCC plans to open its new, smaller-format store downtown toward the end of the year, and T&T announced they’ll open a second US spot in Lynnwood.
