Jennifer Shea helped introduce the cupcake craze to Seattle in 2007. Almost a decade and four bakeries later, Shea remains the cupcake bearer but now brings French-style pastries, savory dishes, and booze to Bellevue. The new 40-seat shop, christened Cafe Trophy, opens in The Bravern today, August 11.
By morning, this 2,000 square-foot bakery and champagne bar will have parfaits made with Ellenos yogurt and scratchmade granola, quiches, plus a well-stocked pastry case. Offerings include French macarons in over 10 flavors such as lavender latte and citrus Earl Grey, cannelles, croissants, cookies, and other delights like a milk chocolate malt passion fruit torte. Also: a lemon olive oil “twinkie”. Nostalgic, minimart staple–loving hearts, be still.
Come lunchtime, there will be savory puff pastries, baguette-based sandwiches, as well as salads with kale and beets because you may need a culinary defibrillator after your minor sugar crash. In the evenings, Cafe Trophy will serve cheese and charcuterie platters atop olivewood boards placed upon marble countertops. Oh hello, Instagram.
As for this cafe blessed with booze, Marc Papineau of Bar Ferd'nand lends his wine wisdom to curate the beer and wine lineup, which focuses on family-owned domains and natural-style wines and Champagnes. Yes, it's true, there is indeed prosecco on tap too.
Behind this sweet and savory menu is chef Chuck Dugo, the erstwhile executive pastry chef at San Francisco's Slanted Door.
And if you don't have the time to perch upon a gilded bar stool, there's a market-style meets bottle shop section with baking staples, grab-and-go lunch items, plus wine, chocolate, cheese, charcuterie, and olives.
To dispel any lingering confusion, the original Trophy Cupcakes bakery at The Bravern is supplanted by the new Cafe Trophy, which is now located the first floor. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 to 9, and Sunday, 8 to 7.
