What: Les Trouvés Red Wine Columbia Valley 2013 $25
Why: In recent years several Washington wineries have tried their hand selling négociant wine, buying anything from fermenting juice all the way up to finished wines which they then sell under their own label. When done well, these wines can provide both quality and value.
The latest to enter the négociant fray is Les Trouvés, French for ‘the found’. The project comes from Marty Taucher and Chris Peterson of Woodinville’s Avennia, a winery that has been making sizable waves in the Washington wine world of late. For Les Trouvés, Peterson buys and blends wine that fits a certain profile. And just what is Peterson looking for?
“First, I want it to be delicious,” Peterson said, noting that he was looking to emulate a Provencal style. “But it’s not something that you have to stroke your beard and ponder. It’s more quaffable.”
The winery’s first release - the Les Trouvés 2013 Red Blend Columbia Valley ($25) - is certainly delicious and quaffable. It’s a mixture of Mourvèdre, grenache, and syrah that brings a whole lot of appeal with peppery spice and herb aromas along with fruit forward, fleshy flavors that make it hard to put down. Drink up!
