Vancouver Cooking Classes Are Worth a Trip

Eat with one hand, take notes with the other.

Don’t just take in the tony neighborhoods of West Vancouver, BC, from afar; step inside a gorgeous home to drink wine, eat delicacies, and soak up the wisdom of an executive chef. The Arts Club Theatre Company is featuring autumn cooking classes through November taught by Canada’s kitchen hotshots.
The events support the theater group and take place in private homes, making the scene more intimate than a restaurant’s kitchen. With 15 to 30 students each, the classes have all the social energy of a night out but are as comfortable as staying in with friends (well, new friends). The houses all belong to the theater’s supporters and board members.
Menus are planned along themes ranging from Italian to Asian to Southern-style BBQ. During the three-hour experience, you’ll get to partake in a four-course meal with wine pairings; the latter are from sponsoring wineries like Mission Hill Family Estate and Ganton & Larsen Prospect Winery.
Tickets are $125 (call 604-687-5315 x248) for events on upcoming Wednesdays. On Oct 19, Shane McNeil, chef of seafood spot Bridges, takes the helm, while Nov 2 features Dennis Huang from Gramercy Grill, a downtown spot devoted to Northwest cuisine. Two more events take place Nov 17 and 21. And while they probably will teach in metric measurements—it’s Canada, after all—the dining portion of the evening won’t get lost in translation.
