Seattle-Area Ski and Snowboard Shops

Where to gear up for a wild, snowy winter.

By Allison Williams and Taylor McKenzie Gerlach December 26, 2024 Published in the Winter 2021 issue of Seattle Met

It's the end of December and all our local ski areas are already open, the Cascades stacked with a healthy base of snow. That can mean only one thing: time for new ski gear! Here's where to shop for the powder hound in your life (or, let's be honest, yourself).

ProSki Seattle

Laurelhurst

The city’s longtime backcountry specialist moved to a fresh locale near the University District. The shop also does season rentals of resort-ready gear and shop work, all with a chatty locals-first vibe. Though the sales floor is small, the stock runs surprisingly deep—and staff expertise means you're better off asking for what you need than browsing aimlessly.

Sturtevant’s

Bellevue, Tacoma

Two Eastside locations plus one in Tacoma serve a wide range of snow-ready goods, including Nordic, backcountry, rental, and kids’ setups. This is also a good destination when you need specialized bags and luggage for big ski or snowboard trips.

The winter season brings more inventory on the "mountain" side of Mountain to Sound.

Mountain to Sound Outfitters

West Seattle

Cheers to a local ski shop that knows the hardy residents of its isolated neighborhood go hard in paddling as well as on the ski slopes. Winter stock includes Nordic, backcountry, and downhill resort gear, plus a selection of car racks to get everything to the mountain (or, of course, the sound).

Alpine Hut

Interbay

For half the year, this outdoor center is dedicated to all things bike, including service. But when the weather shifts it's ski time, including gear tune-ups, season ski rentals, and boot fitting at the hands of certified MasterFit Boot Fitters.

Play It Again Sports

South Lake Union

With so many locals chasing the newest gear, there are a lot of great used skis, snowboards, and boots floating around. The REI-adjacent Play It Again outpost buys used equipment and pays on the spot; they also sell new wares, but the best deals hide in the used racks.

Fremont’s Evo doesn’t skimp on skis.

Evo

Fremont

While the Fremont flagship manages to fit multi-sport equipment and a skate park under one roof, the online arm of the retailer offers a broad selection and well-compiled gear stats. Boot fittings and expert guidance are available in-store; consider visiting during a slower weekday for faster service.

REI

Various

Don't forget about the behemoth of outdoor activity; the REI flagship carries Nordic and all kinds of downhill skis, along with every form of apparel and accessory imaginable. Check online for the full selection, since only a fraction can fit in-store.

Cripple Creek Backcountry

Fremont

The outpost of a small Colorado chain expanded north into Washington with expertise in lightweight gear meant for sporty uphill ski or splitboard travel. Knowledgeable staff can fix almost anything in the shop—or recommend a creative solution. In summer, the store shifts focus to trail running and hiking gear.

Gearhouse

Capitol Hill

This spot is strictly for rentals—and friends. The outdoor club focuses on the social side of snow sports and other extreme endeavors. They'll set you up with rental skis, snowboards, and snowshoes, plus carpools, ski buddies, and repair clinics.

Wonderland Gear Exchange

Fremont

Seattle's consignment gear shop hawks more than just planks to slide down snow; stock includes gloves, jackets, and even safety gear. Earn credit by trading in high quality items that don't fit or suit your winter plans. It's a sustainable way to upgrade with secondhand new-to-you gear.
