Seattle's Freeman Debuts New Line of Women's Raincoats

After what Seattle designers Scott and Brittany Freeman deemed “an unsuccessful search for a cleanly styled, made in USA raincoat,” they combined their carpentry and sewing skills in their studio apartment to create the prototype of their now eponymous line.

Friends and family began requesting their own handmade duds, and in 2010 the Seattle natives launched Freeman. Manufacturing the line in SODO, the couple designs gear they can’t find for themselves on the market.

The lesson there seems to be: if you want it done right (locally, classically) do it yourself.

The new Lady Freeman introduces sporty designs with cuts that channel what the designers call a “vintage mountaineering” vibe. A combination of a two-ply exterior and woven cotton interior keeps you waterproofed and well ventilated, plus they're easy to layer and transition well from downpours to blue skies.

The technical performance is meant to keep up with the PNW's outdoor sporting obsession without looking, well, technical. The pair credit “clean lines and intentional lack of outer branding” for adding a modern aesthetic.

The men’s line is already available at Ian downtown; Lady Freeman will be sold online and at Velouria in Ballard—an appropriate home for the independently made jackets.

Keeping it local, Ballard’s Velouria pairs with Freeman to introduce the new collection of women's raincoats designed and crafted within city limits.
