Go See: Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's

Matthew Miele's documentary about the iconic New York City department store is in Seattle through June 2.

There's only one Bergdorf Goodman, and it sure isn't in Seattle. Actually there are two but they're across the street from each other on New York's Fifth Ave. The geographical isolation and exclusivity of the Neiman Marcus-owned (we do have one of those!) high-fash department store makes it both an odd and alluring subject for the big screen, which is probably why Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's arrived in Seattle on provision.

After a sort of trial period, the feature is now playing at the U-district's Varsity Theater and the Regal Meridian 16 through Sunday, June 2.

Everything’s Jake director and filmmaker Matthew Miele continues his onscreen romance with the Big Apple by examining the powerhouse’s impact on mainstream fashion, the relevance and ultimate future of designers, and the direction and dominance of trends.

Our favorite moments included a series of ethereal window displays by senior director of visual presentation, David Hoey. Throughout the movie you’re outside looking in, and inside looking out, as crystal seafoam creatures and bedazzled unicorns are made to stand alongside glittering Naeem Khan gowns.

Our favorite character might be Betty Halbreich, the painfully frank 85-year-old senior personal shopper, whose unfettered approach to style shapes and defines the American dream—or at least the outfits you might wear while chasing it. And then there's fashion director Linda Fargo, who keeps the Bergdorf wheels spinning via front-row runway seats and a no-holds-barred approach to what's hot.

Cameos from heavy hitters like Michael Kors—whose career began after being discovered by a Bergdorf's buyer—Oscar de la Renta, Georgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, and Karl Lagerfeld pepper the plot. Although we were hoping for more of an all-access pass into the palace, our palates are satiated—at least for the time being.
