This Weekend in NYC: Seattle Designers
SLIDESHOW: New and recent work by Seattle furniture and home decor designers. Here, a design from Grain called Spool. The crazily patterned build-it-yourself modular room divider, table base, or whatever can be assembled to suit your needs. The supercool part: Spool is "made of upcycled paper thread spools removed from the Los Angeles apparel industry’s waste stream," say the Bainbridge Island-based industrial inventors. Spool kits include 240 spools and 520 connectors and go for $199.
Grain is showing two new mirrors at ICFF; this style is backed with laser-cut bamboo and felt and hand-wrapped in hemp twine. They can be fabricated in a variety of color combinations.
Grain’s other mirror is called Hung; it goes for $350 and riffs on rope-work techniques that one of the members learned while studying boat building. So Seattle!
Cool kids Jamie Iacoli and Brian McAllister can be counted on to show up with great colors and perfectly gender neutral lifestyle pieces. And that whole you-didn’t-know-you-needed-it-til-they-made-it thing. Which is partially what got them the attention of the New York Times.
