Product Runway at the Showbox

Fashion hardware; a look from 2009’s Product Runway, sponsored by Brizio, a premier faucet brand.
Where: Showbox SoDo
What: Product Runway’s third biennial garment show. Yeah, product runway. Metal pipes, ceramic tiles, and industrial upholstery fabric don’t generally make for high-end couture, but if you’re intrigued by the nuts and bolts of fashion, or of industrial and interior design and architecture, you might consider a seat at the show. The catch: each gown must be constructed using only interior design materials.
The event—which benefits the Interior Design Coalition of Washington—features couture creations by 15 teams of local interior designers and architects paired with an industrial sponsor.
For example: Burgess Design and Humanscale ergonomic office furniture. The architects at LMN and floor coverings from Atlas Carpet Mills. Don’t expect the same old jersey column dresses or flouncy swing tops.
“The competition is part runway show, part theatrical production. It’s very dramatic,” says Product Runway’s Erica Clemeson.
Now, let’s say a suit sewn from carpeting isn’t your style; you’re happier with streamlined silhouettes in the best silks. You might still want to go for the raffle prize alone. This one is kind of a coup. Someone is going to score a Jason Wu dress. The winner will choose from a variety of styles, and the dress will be sewn to fit the lucky gal meant to go inside it. Totally worth the $2 ticket, right?
When: June 3, doors open at 6. Tickets range from $46 (standing room only) to $110.
