Sale: Secondhand Style at Baby & Co

Score gently used, hardly worn, and basically brand-new fashion from select clients of the downtown boutique this Sunday

By Laura Cassidy August 16, 2010

Sunday’s Baby & Co customer cast-offs sale includes pieces by Comme des Garcons (but not necessarily these ones)

Where: Around the corner from Baby & Co

What: Hear that? It’s the sound of some of Seattle’s most worldly, architectural, and stylish women (in particular, the ones that shop on First and Virginia) showing off their newly cleaned-out and streamlined closets.

Rolling racks of their neatly hung past season, past year, past life pieces — skirts, suits, blouses, coats, shoes from Commes des Garcons, Girbaud, Lilith, Lanvin, Junya Watanabe, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo — sit in the upstairs warehouse at Baby & Co. On Sunday morning it’ll all be transferred to that empty restaurant space at 113 Virginia — just around the corner from the boutique — where you’ll have access to it.

I got a sneak peak at the stuff this weekend and I can tell you that Jill Donnelly and Co are not fooling around. The Baby & Co owner even helped some of the women go through their closets and weed out the expendables. When I paused to finger a pink silk ikat-like CdC skirt, I was told that that particular rack contained the cast-offs of a woman whose best friend is a rep for the iconic, exclusive, insanely covetable Japanese line. The woman is moving oversees and even though she hasn’t even worn many of the items she … can’t take all this stuff with her. Ahhh.

A word to my big-footed friends (you know who you are): In among the eye-popping collection of shoes to be sold are many in the 10-11 range. Which is not to say there aren’t small shoes. There are. There are also brand new shoes that have never been worn.

I was told there will be bargain racks (I saw some Michael Stars T-shirts and Banana Republic-type stuff among the higher end wares), too, so even if you’re not the type of woman who regularly sports intellectually constructed Parisian street fashion, there could be something for you. Then again, at these prices, you could always become that type of woman.

What else: 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to The Mockingbird Society to aid them in their mission to build a world-class foster care system through collaboration, innovation, and advocacy.

And: This sale is cash only.

When: Sunday August 22 from 10-5.
