Towering Tutorial
Sure, there’s the cupcake, and the mini-cupcake. And the old-fashioned candy station. And the macaroon. Oh, the macaroon. But make way — there’s a new wedding reception dessert in town: The doughnut.
Over the last year I’ve seen two or three highly styled, highly spirited Real Weddings submissions featuring the fried, dunkable sweets, but then with the entries we received this fall there were twice again as many. And in our next issue, due on the streets at the first of the year? Well, just you wait and see.
Whether you’re considering a brunch wedding or envisioning decadent plates of powdered sugar-dusted jelly filleds as late night snacks with coffee — or if you simply don’t love cake but you do love cake doughnuts, well, you certainly have some great local options.
Chief among them: Frost Doughnuts from Mill Creek. These are no ordinary maple bar makers. Check out these options from their spring/summer menu: Fresh vanilla cake doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar and topped with lemon buttercreme and lemon zest; blueberry cake doughnut iced with Meyer lemon glaze; organic lavender scented cake doughnut glazed in a light lemongrass glaze; and, finally, the pineapple habanero fritter in which chunks of juicy pineapple are folded into fresh raised fritter — habanero jelly glaze brings the sweet-heat.
And I trust you’ve heard about their bacon-spotted maple bar?
This fall, Frost is tempting us with pumpkin walnut fritters, lemon Bismarks, and candy cane-spiked cake. If you follow them on Twitter, you’ll get the digital equivalent of a fresh and sticky sweet sheet bright and early each morning.
And if you head to the new Sur la Table shop at the Bravern tonight at 6p.m., Frost’s experts will be on hand to demonstrate how they create their reception-worthy, move-over-fondant-covered-gateau-there’s-a-new-dessert-in-town doughnut towers.
Check the slideshow for an image of these flower-strewn goodie structures, and then grab your best friends and baking assistants, and get their early.
Confidential to those brides and grooms so ahead of the curve that they’re already on the lookout for the next Next Thing: Check out CoolHaus. One part gourmet ice cream craze (check) and one part mobile food cart craze (check) … a Seattle knock-off seems inevitable.
