Polite Society politely dispenses with its mens collection

April 3, 2009

I’ve been all over the place this week. Literally. I’m pulling together the most beautiful wedding attire for a photo shoot we’re doing next week for Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom, our wedding mag. It’s a fun job, and someone’s got to do it.

While visiting the European parlor-like high-style Polite Society in Belltown yesterday I got my first glimpse of the store sans its mens department. Owner Eric Aikens and his devastatingly sweet + chic crew are concentrating on their collection of draped Scandinavian dresses and ultra-feminine pin-tucked silk blouses, so the menswear is no more.

Dudes, you will have to look elsewhere for dapper, neo-classic, creatively pin-stripped engineer slacks and European engineered cargo coats. See me if you need suggestions—or, see Eric and the crew; Polite Society remains co-ed in terms of its wonderfully amiable and inspiring staff, whom I’ve always found to be excellent resources/sounding boards for all things sartorial and Seattle-based. I used to say that the shop was a great date spot; you and her or you and him could just wander in and find a zillion looks to try on, together, in the practically private back room. (Plus, who doesn’t look good next to the cerulean walls and amid the antique oddities that Eric picks up from, well, where does he pick that stuff up?) I’d still recommend stopping at Polite Society between dinner and the movie — the atmosphere is just that warm, welcoming, imaginative, and romantic.

I fell in love with the artful Catherine Malandrino top pictured above, and the deep, just-after-the-rainstorm blue of the Brian Reyes dress below. Go soon, and see what you fall in love with.

Oh — and I guess you’re wondering why I stopped in at Polite Society while shopping for a wedding shoot, right? The back of the shop has been transformed into a shop-within-a-shop for local (by way of Russia) designer Madina Vadache. Her line is all about occasions. Very special ones. Talk about falling in love.
