Ballard’s twice-yearly warehouse sale moves to Bellevue this Sunday

April 30, 2009

If you’re the kind of person who has always loved a great deal (you know, pre-all of this near-constant great deal environment), you already know about the twice-yearly warehouse sale that began two years ago in the upstairs office space at Blackbird as a 8-shop collective party aimed at unloading past season gear.

And you might already know that this year, on Sunday May 3 from 10a to 5p to be more precise, the sale is not in Ballard. It’s at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. Yes, it’s true: Seattle’s most essential style sale moved from a cobblestone street in the nabes to the biggest conference center on the Eastside. What’s next? A Neiman Marcus out there? Yeah, that’s coming too.

There are eleven stores participating this year; they include: Blackbird, The Finerie, Horseshoe, Impulse, Tweed, and Marqsmen. (You’ll note that there are shops for gentlemen and for ladies mentioned here, folks. Something for everyone.)

Another is Clutch. I happened to stop in yesterday and ended up snapping a photo of this giant patent leather bag in the perfect shade of dove grey. It’s going to Bellevue with Kimberly tomorrow, where it’ll be about 60% off it’s regular price.

Clearance items from all stores will be reduced to near-giveaway prices, but like other store owners, Kimberly is taking an individual, judicious, and fair-yet-generous approach to pricing newer merchandise. And I mean, c’mon. It’s not like you haven’t been scoring amazing deals since back in November.

some things to know:

-you’ll need a ten dollar bill for entrance

-cash is the preferred form of payment; some vendors will accept checks or credit cards

-bring your own bag — actually, the organizers recommend one of those rolling suitcase dealies

-there is a parking lot on-site, and some street parking—but I wouldn’t count on a lot of it

for the first time, shop owners and employees will also be bringing their own vintage gear and discarded designer stuff this could be a serious boon

-when it’s all over, you’ll need a drink — check my co-workers’ brilliantly exhaustive and well-researched Best Bars feature (that’s some research gig, eh?) and this write-up of the Eastside’s finest cocktail lounge

-yes, buying from local, independently owned boutiques at such outrageous prices does help our city’s economy stay afloat. it helps pay store employees, rents, and electricity bills.

-what helps even more is buying at full price

-we are all in all of this together
